November 1990. I had arrived in the Balinese port of PadangBai and
was staying overnight in a guest house ready to catch the ferry to
Lombok next morning.
I had been in Indonesia for 3 weeks and not seen a TV or opened a
newspaper, hence I had been completely out of touch with the world.
That night I met a chap fresh out of England.
“What news from the old country?” I asked him.
Without a pause, he replied “Peggy Archer’s getting married”.
